Powder coatings are greener than you might think, as is the process ......
Low environmental impact for several reasons:
A dry powder, requiring no solvents, unlike wet spray paints.
No solvents mean the powder emits zero or negligible volatile organic compounds (VOCs).VOCs have high vapour pressures that can be harm to human health when released into the air.
Powder coatings contain no halogens or heavy metals.
When PWF is used with aluminium, the appearance of wood can be achieved without destroying any forests.
Powder coatings can impart many different appearances to aluminium as our Finishes and Collections describe. This means that highly abundant and recyclable aluminium is used instead of more scarce resources
Powder coating does not affect the recyclability of metals.
An independent study commissioned by Powdertech, with a cradle-to-gate assessment, has shown that the process of powder coating has minimal impact on the carbon footprint of aluminium façade and rainscreen panels. The findings confirmed that the powder coating process contributes very little to the overall carbon footprint of aluminium façade and rainscreen panels. In fact, less than 2 kg CO2-eq. per m² (or 0.25 C02e/kgAl on a 3mm aluminium substrate) comes from the coating stage, proving that polyester powder coating is a low-impact finishing choice. The study showed that packaging offers the opportunity for reducing environmental impact. By re-thinking packaging materials, reducing unnecessary wrapping, and working with both our customers and our packaging suppliers, we can take real steps to cut carbon and waste.
Powder coating is a factory-controlled application so there is no on-site impact.
The process takes place in a sealed booth. Any powder that is over-sprayed is collected, filtered and re-used.
No hazardous waste - latest technologies ensure that up to 95% of what is sprayed adheres to the metal. The little that is left over is safely disposed as an inert powder.
We are proud of our commitment to protecting the environment and working towards a sustainable future.
