The Requirement

A striking external envelope was planned for the brand-new Skills and Innovation Centre at South Staffordshire College’s campus. The building will house leading-edge construction, engineering and hybrid vehicle technology workshops, along with innovatively designed social spaces and occupies pride of place on the college’s town centre site.

The architects envisaged a facade of long vertical fins giving the appearance of timber. The fins would also screen a roof-top substation from view.

The Powdertech Solution

We were contacted by Maple, suppliers of the extensive vertical fin façade to be constructed from lightweight aluminium. Aluminium has many advantages over wood, a key factor for this project being its ability to accomplish very long spans with structural integrity and low weight.

Maple has used our Powdertech Wood Finish (PWF ™) in the past and knew it would be the perfect finish for the aluminium fins, providing the appearance of natural wood with the authentic variations in colour, grain density and grain pattern of wood. The preferred Wood Finish shade was selected, a warm cedar tone

Installed on the building the fins look stunning, giving the impression of enormous lengths of wood wrapping around the exterior.

Why Powdertech Wood Finish?
  • Combines the strength and longevity of metal with the warm, natural appeal of wood with a high level of colour and gloss retention
  • Excellent corrosion protection and resistance against abrasion and weather.
  • Conforms to Fire Reaction classification A2-s1, d0
  • Use of aluminium with a coating that can be removed at end of life leaving the underlying metal unaffected gives a high level of sustainability
  • Environmentally friendly – no solvents, no VOCs, no hazardous waste.
  • Low maintenance - unlike wood.
  • The PWF range conforms to EN 12206-1 and Qualicoat specifications.
