The Requirement
Barking Wharf is a ‘Build to Rent’ property, built on the site of what had become a rather unattractive retail park in Barking, North East London. The retail park had screened the town from connection with the river and one of the objectives behind the residential wharf development was to re-establish a riverside ambience and also benefit from views across Abbey Park which contains the ruins of a 7th century Abbey. The developers considered this a sensitive site, with the ancient ruins so close by, and demanded a sympathetic design approach.
The two buildings which range from 7 storeys high to 15 storeys are covered in simple brick cladding which has a timeless appeal. This is complemented by metal balustrade and balconies, soffits and fascia in classic grey shades, and areas of brick corbelling.
