The Requirement

South Caldecote, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire is a 135-acre warehousing and distribution site close to a lake, planned to house 2.2 million square feet of cutting-edge buildings for specialist UK logistics and industrial property business PLP. On completion it will incorporate 17-acres of lowland meadows and 3.8 kilometres of pedestrian and cycle ways, which will integrated into the MK Red Way cycle network.

The entire site is designed to be highly sustainable with carbon net zero. This includes using PV solar panels, and low carbon concrete, cladding and steel.

Constrasol aluminium solar shading is installed at the entrances to the distribution units and the metal finish needed to exactly match a shade of cyan paint already used as a feature band running at mid-height around the units.

The Powdertech Solution

Powdertech was selected as the powder coater for Constrasol aluminium solar shading to be installed at the entrances to the distribution units. Cyan is not a common colour and Powdertech spent time with the customer developing the specification for the powder coating shade. We are very aware of the role of branding and livery and the importance invested in colour matching to present a professional well-designed appearance. Swatches and samples were sent to and fro between Powdertech and the customer until the cyan shade was perfected and agreed upon.

Powder coating is completely in line with the sustainable requirements of this site. The inert powder needs no solvents, contains no VOCs or toxic metals. Coating is carried out under factory conditions and produces no hazardous waste.

Powdertech coated extruded aluminium in 250mm x 50mm, rectangular sections, totalling 900 linear metres(over half a mile). The shade used was RAL Design 240 60 40, Cyan manufactured by Axalta.
