The Requirement
Queen’s Quay is £250 million mixed-use regeneration project built on the site of the former John Brown’s shipyard in Clydebank, Glasgow - the QE2 and Queen Mary ocean liners were built here. The new waterside development will include housing, commercial units, a £19m health centre, a £10m care home and an hotel. Central to the development is the Energy Centre and District Heating Network which features Scotland’s first large-scale water source heat pump to serve the entire 80-acre Queen’s Quay site, and beyond.
Project criteria
Design plans for the site positioned the Energy Centre as an integral part of the development, very much in view as a focal point. As such it has been designed to create an attractive feature within Queen’s Quay, complementing the historic Titan Crane, another local landmark. The thriving industrial heritage of the site needed honouring and the designers were set on giving the building an updated industrial appeal, with a nod to the past and the future at the same time.
