Re-use, heritage, and sustainability: the shift is clear

Architect Roz Barr, architect member of the RIBA Awards panel, shared an encouraging perspective on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme this morning. Reflecting on the 20 national winners of the 2025 RIBA Awards—narrowed down from 300 regional entries—she noted:

“I am pleased to see a lot more re-use of existing buildings and historic buildings this year. That’s been great to see and it shows the shift we are making environmentally.”

We wholeheartedly agree. As powder coaters, we see firsthand how reusing architectural metal aligns with broader environmental goals—and how powder coating plays a key role in that process.

Powder coatings are themselves an environmentally responsible finish: solvent-free, low-waste, and energy-efficient in application. They’re also ideal for enhancing repurposed architectural metals—especially when design sensitivity is key. Our Evolution and PowderLUX ranges  of patinated metallics offer finishes that beautifully complement older and historic buildings. So do our Stone, Wood, and Terracotta finishes, which add natural texture and warmth while delivering a contemporary edge.

All provide a highly durable, A2-s1,d0-rated finish with excellent corrosion and abrasion resistance, low maintenance, and the option to be stripped and replaced without damaging the substrate—helping materials last longer and adapt over time.

Explore our Finishes and Projects pages to see how these coatings support sustainable, architectural reuse.
